How to Apply for a Passport in Kashmir — Complete 2025 Guide
Applying for a passport in Jammu & Kashmir can feel complicated — between the Passport Seva Kendra appointments, the document checklist, and the police verification process. This guide covers everything you need to know to get your passport without any confusion.
Types of Passport Applications
Before starting your application it is important to know which type applies to you:
- Fresh passport — for people applying for the first time
- Renewal — for people whose passport has expired or is expiring within 1 year
- Tatkal — urgent processing, issued within 1 to 3 working days (higher fee)
- Duplicate passport — if your passport was lost or damaged
Step-by-Step Application Process
Register on Passport Seva Portal
Go to passportindia.gov.in and create a new account using your email address. This is free and takes 2 minutes.
Fill the Online Application Form
Log in and click Apply for Fresh Passport or Re-issue of Passport. Fill in all personal details carefully — name, date of birth, address, and family details exactly as they appear on your documents.
Pay the Application Fee
Pay online using debit card, credit card, or net banking. Keep the receipt — you will need it at the appointment.
Book an Appointment at PSK Srinagar
After payment select the Passport Seva Kendra Srinagar and book an appointment slot. Arrive 15 minutes early on the appointment day.
Visit the PSK with Original Documents
Carry all original documents plus one set of self-attested photocopies. Your biometrics (photo and fingerprints) are taken at the PSK.
Police Verification
After your PSK visit the local police station does a verification visit to your address. This is mandatory for J&K residents. Keep your documents ready at home.
Receive your Passport
Your passport is dispatched by Speed Post to your registered address after verification is complete. Normal processing takes 30 to 45 days, tatkal takes 7 to 14 days.

- Old address on Aadhaar — if your Aadhaar shows an old address update it before applying
- Missing domicile certificate — J&K residents are frequently rejected without this
- Wrong photo format — must be white background, taken recently, no glasses
- Not carrying originals — photocopies alone are not accepted at the PSK counter
